Towards the end of last week and over the weekend it was reported that WWE had booked a Nia Jax vs. Dean Ambrose intergender match at an upcoming house show. The reason this was such a big deal is that WWE haven’t allowed this kind of match for several years, with a general ban on men fighting women.
There were plenty of people who simply assumed this match wouldn’t actually happen, and it seems that their scepticism was well placed, as both the Wrestling Observer and Post Wrestling are now reporting that the match will not be taking place.
Post Wrestling’s John Pollock, who spoke directly with WWE about the match, described the advert that circulated for the match as “outdated”.
It isn’t entirely clear why WWE has backtracked on the idea so suddenly, but it’s very possible that some anti-intergender wrestling sponsors spoke up and WWE got cold feet about the whole idea.
With Dean set to leave the company, has WWE simply decided to cancel the match and feud to avoid a sudden end when his contract expires in April? Either way, it’s a bit of a shame, as intergender wrestling happens all over the planet and much of it is incredibly entertaining.
