Per the Wrestling Observer, Stephanie McMahon held a meeting with WWE talent ahead of last night’s Money In The Bank pay-per-view event. The speech was nothing out of the ordinary, except for Stephanie acknowledge All Elite Wrestling as direct competition for the company.
Stephanie and other backstage officials were really hammering home WWE’s impressive social media numbers and YouTube views. They said that they already have to compete with other companies in terms of video games, movies and streaming services, but are not being challenged by AEW.
The fact that Stephanie mentioned AEW is particularly interesting as it shows just how much WWE is worried about the new promotion. Throughout history when these sorts of meetings have taken place, there has never been any mention of another wrestling company.
This comes after WWE recently pulled one of their NXT UK stars from a match with the Stardom promotion as they didn’t want said person losing to someone signed by AEW.
