Hall of Famer Kurt Angle has explained why a WWE produced WCW show would’ve failed, and why “WWE ECW” didn’t work.
WCW and ECW were both popular alternatives to WWE in the late 1990s. WWE would purchase the assets of both promotions respectively, notably starting an “Invasion” storyline between WCW and WWE talent, and relaunching ECW as a WWE brand.
Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show podcast (via AdFreeShows), Angle noted that fans are smart, and would see the brands as “WWE’s version”. Noting that excitement wains when one company buys every other promotion, Angle said:
“I don’t know, the fans are so smart, they know that the WWE purchased WCW. When there’s a ratings war and there are two companies with two different owners, fans get excited, they want to see that, they want to compare the companies.
“But when one company buys every other company, the excitement is gone. It’s no longer the ‘Real WCW’ or the ‘Real ECW’, it’s the WWE’s version of WCW or ECW. I think that’s the reason why it didn’t work either time.”
On Raw, WCW legend Goldberg returned to confront WWE Champion Bobby Lashley. It had previously been reported that Lashley and Goldberg will do battle for the WWE Title at SummerSlam.
A independent promotion recently filed to trademark two terms that ECW had previously used as event names.
