NJPW star and uncrowned IWGP Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay was scheduled to make his MLW debut recently, when he announced on Twitter that the appearance would no longer be happening.
Ospreay took to Twitter to inform people that he would still be appearing for the promotion, but not when he first thought it would be happening.
Dave Meltzer provided an update in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, saying that Ospreay was supposed to debut at the MLW tapings in Tijuana, Mexico this past weekend, but New Japan Pro Wrestling didn’t allow it as AAA wrestlers would be on the show.
He said:
“Will Ospreay wrestling here (MLW) has fallen through. There were a number of reasons. MLW had changed dates and they wanted him to debut at the tapings in Tijuana this past weekend but New Japan wouldn’t allow it because there would be AAA wrestlers on the show. With Ospreay returning to Japan, that will make it more difficult for dates, plus the issue of MLW’s middleweight title being on the line for All Japan in Japan also made it politically difficult since New Japan and All Japan currently aren’t working together. The hope was for Ospreay to debut in Tijuana, and then on the December taping in New York that was moved. Ospreay did say that he would eventually wrestle in MLW, just not now.”
Ospreay will face either Shingo Takagi or Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title on January 5 at WrestleKingdom.
