Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite was highly anticipated due to the ongoing backstage drama in the company, with many fans wondering how the issues would be addressed on the show.
Tony Khan opened the show by announcing that both the AEW World Championship and the AEW Trios Championship had been vacated due to the situation.
Khan first announced that the new AEW Trios Champions would be crowned in the opening match of the show, when Death Triangle faced the Best Friends. Death Triangle were victorious, becoming the new champions.
Tony also announced a ‘tournament of champions’ to crown the new AEW World Champion, with the final set to take place at AEW Grand Slam in two weeks.
The bracket saw Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho receive byes to the semi-finals, with the first round matches being between Bryan Danielson and Adam Page, and Darby Allin and Sammy Guevara.
The first match of the tournament took place on tonight’s Dynamite, and saw Bryan Danielson defeat Hangman Adam Page, earning him a match with Chris Jericho on next week’s show.
The other first round match between Allin and Guevara will take place on this week’s AEW Rampage, with the winner facing Jon Moxley on the following week’s show.
