With the IWGP Women’s Champion Mercedes Mone set to face AZM, a future challenger has also been named in a new report.
Mone recently confirmed her upcoming appearance at NJPW Sakura Genesis on April 8, at the time of writing a challenger hadn’t been set.
Dave Meltzer has provided details of the upcoming show and what the future holds for Mone.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Meltzer states:
“The Mercedes Mone vs. Mayu Iwatani IWGP women’s title match as scheduled right now can’t be announced until after 4/8, when Mone defends against AZM, the High Speed champion, on the New Japan show at Sumo Hall in Tokyo.
“So it’s notable they are pushing the biggest show in the company history and Mone will be getting the most money for a Stardom show of anyone in history, but because of tradition on how they do things, they can’t push her for the show until 15 days earlier.
“I don’t see why they can’t push that Mone will be on the show as the big selling point even if they can’t say specifically her match.”
Mone has recently stated that she will face anyone, specifically “whoever has the biggest bag”.
