It’s a match that WWE fans are eager to see after both stars crossed paths at Royal Rumble in January 2023, but we may be waiting longer.
Despite being a “pencilled-in” match for WrestleMania 39 at one point, the Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER did not face Brock Lesnar at the two-night premium live event.
Previous reporting had stated it was felt that the Austrian “still needs another year to be established as a top name on the roster before he’s ready for a showcase match with Lesnar.”
Brock Lesnar has, however, also commented on the potential of what many see as a “dream match”.
According to Dave Meltzer, it is a dream match that we may not be seeing soon.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Meltzer reports:
“Right now there are no plans for Lesnar vs. Gunther at SummerSlam or Lesnar vs. Gunther any time soon.
“Of course that can change because it is a viable match But if Lesnar is scheduled on SummerSlam there is already a direction that isn’t Gunther.”
WRKD had recently reported that the idea had been “floated” backstage for Lesnar and GUNTHER to face off “sometime this summer.”
GUNTHER holds the record for the number of Wrestling Observer Five Star matches awarded to a WWE star by Dave Meltzer.
Brock Lesnar is set to face Cody Rhodes at WWE Backlash on May 6 in Puerto Rico.
