With the current issue of Wrestling Observer Newsletter covering WrestleMania 39, one star now has the most WWE five-star matches.
Per the current Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Gunther vs Sheamus vs Drew McIntyre on night 2 of WrestleMania 39 scored a five-star rating from Dave Meltzer.
William Regal commented ahead of the match, expressing his pride in the way that “Europeans have shaped this industry worldwide.”
Already sitting on four other highly rated by Dave Meltzer matches, this fifth match has given Gunther the most five-star matches in WWE history.
The other matches to receive high praise were:
Gunther vs Sheamus for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at Clash at the Castle in September 2022 with 5 stars.
Gunther vs Ilja Dragunov from NXT TakeOver 36 in August 2021 for the NXT UK Championship, which was awarded 5.25 stars.
The NXT UK TakeOver: Cardiff match in August 2019 where the then-WALTER defeated Tyler Bate in a 5.25-star classic.
The October 29 2020 episode of NXT UK which saw WALTER retain against Ilja Dragunov and was awarded 5 stars.
Following their moment in the Royal Rumble which led to speculation that Gunther may face Brock Lesnar, Lesnar has spoken about the possibility of facing the Austrian.
