3. Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar (vs. Seth Rollins) – WrestleMania 31

Santa Clara was hostile territory for Roman Reigns when he walked into WrestleMania 31. He was the most unpopular man in WWE and he was facing one of the most beloved. Yes, it is hard to believe but there was a time when Brock Lesnar was beloved.

For the first 10-12 minutes, this match was great. Lesnar suplexed Reigns over and over but Reigns continued to laugh it off. It looked as if this would be his coronation. However, in reaction to Reigns not being over to the level of his push, WWE went a different direction. Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to enter their match and win the WWE Championship, making a great match an all-time WrestleMania moment.

2. Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan – Fastlane 2015

One month before WrestleMania 31, Roman Reigns had to fight his way through THE most beloved man in WWE, Daniel Bryan. Not sure why WWE thought this would make Reigns popular but that was the idea. At Fastlane, Bryan and Reigns clashed over a shot at the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. I guess you can tell who won.

Bryan played a subtle heel for a good portion of the match and he is one of the best wrestlers in the world so it should be no shock that this match was as good as it was. This was another case of an experienced worker helping turn Reigns into what he is now. For a while, this was the best match of Reigns’ career, but that was until he faced AJ Styles.

1. Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles – Extreme Rules 2016

AJ Styles had been one of the most accomplished wrestlers of the 21st century everywhere but WWE. In 2016, he got the chance to make his name on wrestling’s biggest stage. It took a little while to get fully acclimated to the WWE ring and style, but at Extreme Rules, he had the best match of Roman Reigns’ career.

This had just about everything you can look for in a WWE match. They had hardcore weapons shots, drama with the Club and Usos running wild, and great in-ring action. There were people who theorized that it was this performance from Styles that got Vince McMahon behind him as he made Reigns look like a million bucks. To his credit, Reigns more than held up his end of the bargain, putting on maybe the greatest performance of his career.
