205 Live Review, May 1, 2018 – Murphy Wants His Shot

Kalisto vs. Drew Gulak

Before the match, Gulak called out Kalisto for failing at the Greatest Royal Rumble and said he would get his revenge for last week, and prove he is the best submission specialist in WWE.

Gulak wore down Kalisto early with a myriad of submission moves. Kalisto tried to pick up the pace with a top-rope arm drag, but Gulak cut him off when Kalisto took to the skies for a dive. He continued to dominate Kalisto with a “Glory Stretch,” before merging into a modified Boston Crab. Kalisto again started to mount a comeback, but Gulak knocked him back down with a stiff forearm. He then began to target Kalisto’s mask but was tossed to the outside by the luchador.

For the first time in the match, Kalisto mounted some offense against his bigger opponent, including a beautiful seated springboard move to Gulak on the outside. Back in the ring, the men traded pinfall attempts to no avail. After a strike sequence, Kalisto went up top but was caught by Gulak, who locked him in the “Gu-Lock.” Soon thereafter, Kalisto tapped out, and Gulak got his win back.

Result: Drew Gulak def. Kalisto via submission

Gulak getting his win back was the right call here. He’s been a staple of the division since its rebirth (and the rebirth of the rebirth). Putting him over a former United States Champion gives him even more to boast about, and winning by submission lends credence to his campaign for “A Better 205 Live.”

The show faded out with Lucha House Party consoling their fallen companion. It was announced throughout the night that two big matches would take place next week, as Jack Gallagher and The Brian Kendrick would team up against the other two members of LHP. Also on the show, Buddy Murphy will have to go through Mustafa Ali en route to a Cruiserweight Championship shot.
