7 Biggest Takeaways From WWE SummerSlam 2021

WWE’s Biggest Party of the Summer took place on August 21, 2021, and was quite a notable show for the direction they are taking their storylines going into the latter half of the year.

However, does this mean it was good? No. Not really.

SummerSlam was the biggest party of burials, part-timers and Damian Priest. We all know Priest will never miss a party!

On the other hand, the show did provide some decent action. Edge vs. Seth Rollins delivered. Usos vs. Mysterios delivered.

Unfortunately, good action still cannot save WWE from the hectic booking decisions made as of late.

With words like ‘terrible’ and ‘trash’ trending in the wrestling category on Twitter. Should WWE be celebrating the #1 trend worldwide position? Very debatable.

Let’s dive into Seven takeaways from WWE SummerSlam 2021.

1. Becky Lynch Returns And Wins SmackDown Women’s Championship

Let’s firstly start with the one that has been on many fans’ minds today. Becky Lynch returned! Woohoo!

This is a moment wrestling fans have been waiting to see happen since her departure. Lynch left WWE when she announced she and Rollins were expecting their first child in May 2020.

Since that moment, Lynch was one of the most over babyfaces. It was a mixed bag of emotions to see her leave. We were all so proud to see her go from ‘The Man’ to ‘The Mom’ but were also devastated to see the void she would be leaving on the women’s roster.

Belair was the saving grace in the division since Lynch was gone. Why has the most genuine champion in some time lost the way she did?

It was announced that Sasha Banks could not compete in her WrestleMania title rematch with Bianca Belair. This is apparently not a storyline reason. Afterward, Carmella replaced The Boss to a plethora of boos.

Lynch then made her return, taking Carmella’s place. Las Vegas was gleaming to see The Man back in a WWE ring. That was until she proposed a SmackDown Women’s Championship match and did Belair dirty with a fake handshake into the manhandle slam for the win.

Lynch as SmackDown Women’s Champion isn’t what’s wrong here. It is the complete burial of one of their top stars in Belair. Very remindful of when Kofi Kingston got destroyed by Lesnar. Why could they not just have a full match at SummerSlam which leads to Lynch getting a deserving victory?

2. Damian Priest Wins United States Championship

I really wish Sheamus had a better run as United States Champion. His match with Riddle at ‘Mania was excellent. However, putting him in subpar feuds with Humberto Carrillo and Ricochet just wasn’t the way to elevate his fight-club character.

Saying that, SummerSlam was definitely the night for Priest to become a singles champion in WWE. If he lost, his momentum would have been largely derailed.

Moreover, I’d argue that they should’ve capitalized on Priest months ago. In a better timeline, he should’ve beat Sheamus on the night after WrestleMania.

Save us from those pointless Sheamus feuds and more importantly from Priest’s never-ending rivalry with Miz, Morrison and zombies.

I guess it’s better late than never. I hope he is one of the fighting champions that defends his belt each and every week, gifting us with good tv on what can be a very lackluster Raw these days.

3. RK-Bro Wins RAW Tag Team Championship

One of the more rewarding things to happen at Summerslam, kicked off the entire show! RK-Bro may have had a rocky start but they truly look exceptional as Raw Tag Team Champions.

Their victory just proves if WWE allowed talent to get more creative and out-of-the-box with their storylines then the outcome will deliver.

RK-Bro is now undoubtedly the best thing going on Raw.

The match was okay but didn’t hit the nail on the head. The build around this match was fully focused on RK-Bro being unable to topple Omos with an RKO.

You would have guessed the title coronation would’ve come after that feat was accomplished but it was Styles that fell to the three deadliest letters instead.

Omos probably wouldn’t be able to sell the RKO anyways as is traditional with men his height. Let’s hope he can return to being Styles’ threatening bodyguard going forward.

Riddle announced in an interview after the match that he will host a celebration on Raw. What do they have planned?
