El Grande Americano is the new WWE AAA Mega Champion, defeating Dominik Mysterio to win the gold at Triplemanía 34.
Following the Raw star’s championship victory, we could see more main roster stars challenge for the top prize in AAA.
From ex-rivals to former WWE world champions, these stars would present interesting challenges for El Grande Americano, as he attempts to prove that he is the best lucha libre talent in the company.
Here are five Raw and SmackDown stars we could soon see challenge for El Grande Americano’s AAA Mega Championship.
CM Punk
With Worlds Collide set to emanate from Illinois’ Allstate Arena, CM Punk has made some interesting teases ahead of the crossover show.
Not only has Punk teased appearing at the event, he has hinted that he will appear in his Straight Edge Society mask.
If CM Punk is embracing lucha libre culture for one night, it would certainly make headlines if the company announced that he will challenge for the AAA Mega Championship.
With Punk no longer being Undisputed WWE Champion, now feels like the perfect time to have him pursue a different title.
Rey Fenix
Rey Fenix is in the midst of an impressive run as AAA World Cruiserweight Champion, with the SmackDown star retaining the gold at Triplemanía 34 against Nathan Frazer, Jack Cartwheel and Mini Vikingo.
With Fenix having brought the title to Raw and SmackDown in recent months, the Lucha Brother has been used as a bridge between AAA and the main roster.
While Rey Fenix may currently have his hands full, if he was to lose the World Cruiserweight Championship, his resume would make him more than deserving of a Mega Title match.
With Fenix and El Grande Americano both being established stars on the main roster, this match could realistically take place on any of WWE’s main brands.
Dragon Lee
Interestingly, it was at an AAA event prior to WWE’s acquisition of the promotion that Dragon Lee announced that he was signing with WWE, immediately after his and Dralistico’s World Tag Team Championship win at Noche de Campeones.
WWE has touted Dragon Lee as the future of lucha libre since then, however the luchador has yet to hold a singles title since officially moving to the main roster.
We could see Dragon Lee have a similar career trajectory to Rey Fenix, proving himself with a singles championship reign in AAA before returning to the main roster an even bigger star.
While the luchador is currently in the Intercontinental Championship scene on Raw, we could see him pull a Dominik Mysterio and also vie for the AAA Mega Title.
Penta
Penta recently proved himself as the best luchador in WWE, winning the World Heavyweight Championship #1 contender’s tournament featuring the best lucha libre talent from Raw, SmackDown and AAA.
A notable omission from this tournament was El Grande Americano, who remained in Mexico while Penta defeated Laredo Kid, La Parka and Rey Fenix in tournament action.
Regardless of the result of his title match against Roman Reigns on Monday Night Raw, we could soon see Penta challenge for the top title in AAA, following his recent wins over other luchadores.
El Grande Americano vs Penta is arguably the biggest luchador vs luchador match WWE and AAA could book right now.
Chad Gable
At AAA Noche de Los Grandes, El Grande Americano defeated the “Original” El Grande Americano in a Mask vs Mask which many have called a match of the year contender.
Following his unmasking, Chad Gable reintroduced himself to the AAA crowd, and vowed to return in the future.
Both stars went on to win championship gold in the months following this match, with Chad Gable becoming Intercontinental Champion at SummerSlam.
With their first match receiving universal acclaim, it would be interesting to see Americano and Gable face off again, under this new dynamic.
