Adam Copeland Shares Advice To Former WWE Stars Signing With AEW

Adam Copeland has shared the advice he would give to former WWE stars who end up signing with AEW following their departure.

No stranger to the transition himself, having left WWE after two decades as Edge, Adam Copeland has now been an AEW star for just under three years.

Well aware of the challenges of moving from one company to the other, Copeland would be asked if he had any advice in an interview with Forbes, saying:

“I’d say just don’t think too much. Just do your thing. That’s what I’ve always kind of leaned back on. It’s like, I’ve been doing this for a long time. I know what I’m doing. I’m not going to second-guess myself at this stage. If something doesn’t work, then it didn’t work. Worth a shot.

“And I’d rather be the guy taking chances than the guy talking about other people taking chances. More than anything, just do the thing that got you here and sort it out as you go, because there are different elements to the audience, for sure.

“I guess it’s a different audience, but at the same time, come out to Mexico and it’s just like, okay, clearly they watched my entire career.”

Having the confidence to make the move would be a key component in Copeland’s thought process, with the star going on to state:

“I guess leaving WWE and leaving what you know and what you’ve known for so long instead of staying in that comfortable, safe spot. But I had faith in myself and faith in what I saw with AEW, that they were doing something cool, and I wanted to be a part of that.

“I wanted to get in there with a lot of talent that I’d never been in there with and honestly still haven’t. I feel like we’ve only kind of scratched the surface on opponents, so I think that was probably, at least on paper, the biggest thing, making that jump.”

When it comes to stars he is yet to work with, Copeland has previously addressed potential names while contemplating his in-ring retirement.

There’s Plenty Of Opportunity For The Right Former WWE Star

Regardless of how some debuts may be received, AEW is always likely to attract former WWE stars, with Tony Khan being well aware of what’s happening in the wrestling world when it comes to free agents.

Bringing in former WWE stars does more than attract interest in those names, but also adds a star who is already comfortable with being on a live television product, needing little polish when it comes to reacting in the right way for both the live crowd and the cameras.

It goes without say that there’s a vast difference between acting out in smaller venue on a show that is pre-recorded for later distribution, and doing the same on a television product, be it Dynamite, Raw, SmackDown or Impact Wrestling. It goes beyond the cameras, though, with Finn Balor previously commenting that he thought he was “wasting his career” in NXT only to understand that the coaches were refining his skills to allow him to compete for an extended period.

Having those skills doesn’t take away from the strength of the independent talent that AEW signs, with the former WWE stars able to share their knowledge, elevating all who step into the ring.

The opportunity is more than just the signing and the matches, it’s an chance to share what has been learned in WWE to stars who may, one day, end up heading in that direction, such is the nature of the top companies.
