Roman Reigns has sent a message to his potential opponent on the September 14 episode of WWE Raw in Mexico City.

In an idea formulated by AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio and pitched to Roman Reigns on the August 3 episode of WWE Raw, eight luchador stars have been battling it out in recent weeks for the opportunity to challenge ‘The OTC’ for his World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 episode of Raw in Mexico City.

The tournament, which consisted of WWE’s Rey Fenix, Penta and Dragon Lee, as well as AAA’s Psycho Clown, La Parka, Laredo Kid, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr and El Fiscal, has now boiled down to just two, as the Lucha Brothers Penta and Rey Fenix will do battle in the final on Raw on Monday, August 31.

With Reigns also scheduled to appear on that episode of Raw, he has now taken to Twitter to send a message to whoever comes out on top.

Sharing a graphic for the September 14 WWE Raw – which features himself front and center and all participants in the luchador tournament behind him – Reigns wrote:

Who’s going to step up and make the most of this opportunity?

I’ll be waiting. ☝🏽

Monday’s Raw will be the first time Penta and Fenix have met one-on-one in their WWE careers, but not their first meeting in a world title tournament setting.

Back in October 2020, the two brothers met in the first round of the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament, and on that night it was Fenix who picked up the win.

A Foregone Conclusion Yes, But A Welcome Change Of Opponent For Roman Reigns

The luchador tournament was a surprising announcement by WWE at the beginning of this month, particularly when it appeared clear that LA Knight was being positioned as Roman Reigns’ next big challenger for the World Heavyweight Title.

While much of the focus on WWE Raw has been on Knight and Solo Sikoa’s war with The Bloodline, the luchador tournament has been ticking along in the background over the past two weeks and providing standout matches and moments, such as Dragon Lee’s incredible dive during his match with Rey Fenix on Monday.

In front of a rampant Mexico City crowd, the actual World Heavyweight Championship match itself should also be highly memorable, as well as provide Reigns a rare first-time opponent in Fenix or Penta.

Given the direction that WWE are going with LA Knight, Solo Sikoa and now Royce Keys, it appears highly unlikely that we see a title change in Mexico City, however, the possibility alone will be enough to make it a spectacle.

Reigns’ limited WWE schedule often makes it difficult for anything other than matches with the biggest names at the grandest events, but if they can make room for more experiments such as the luchador tournament it would certainly break up some of the monotony that can arise at times through his title runs.
