AEW Star Reveals True Legacy After Future Retirement

An AEW star has revealed what they consider to be their true legacy after they decide to retire from the ring.

With a number of high profile veterans having recently retired as in-ring competitors, Adam Copeland has addressed when he would consider his legacy when that happens.

For Copeland, his retirement timeline is far from fixed, with the star now heading to AEW All In: London with Christian Cage to defend the World Tag Team Championship against The Young Bucks.

A WWE Hall of Famer, a WWE Grand Slam Champion, a two-time TNT Champion and one-half of the current AEW World Tag Team Champions, Copeland has amassed quite the legacy over his more than thirty-year career.

This, however, isn’t the legacy he considers when it comes to a potential retirement, revealing to Forbes in a recent interview:

“I can’t get wrapped up in a legacy for something that’s predetermined. Do the New England Patriots have a legacy? Yes, because they legitimately won the Super Bowl many times. Okay, but this is entertainment.

“I know some people look at it that way. I just don’t. I look at it like I do a job, and it’s a fun job, and that’s the extent of it.

“My legacy is my kids. My legacy is producing good human beings and putting them into the world. My legacy is how I treat my friends. Those are legacies. Those are things that actually matter. What I do in spandex doesn’t really matter.”

Copeland would also share the advice he would offer to former WWE stars should they sign deals with AEW in the future.

What Really Matters

When it comes to legacy, particularly for stars with lengthy careers, championships, rivalries and Hall of Fame inductions no doubt play a part in their mindset, so it’s refreshing that Copeland looks at it in the way that he does.

Out of “the wrestling” part of professional wrestling, a good life surely plays a part in what the stars leave behind. Looking at some of the stars who have seen their careers cut short, the likes of Big E and TJ Wilson may be remembered for their in-ring careers, yet it’s what they have become since then that drives them forward and is likely to inspire future generations of stars more than any particular match or feud.

This isn’t to say that what happens on screen doesn’t matter. It certainly does, but perhaps not for everyone in the same way. Actors likely go through the same thing; for all the accolades and paydays, for many its likely to be their relationships that mean more than anything tangible.
