WWE Name Competing In First Match In Around Five Years

A WWE name is competing in their first match in under five years, with it taking place in another company.

Drake Maverick has served in a backstage role since his return to WWE in February 2022, joining the creative team.

A former WWE 24/7 Champion, the star was last seen in action back in November 2021, losing the title to Reggie.

Now, he’s set for an in-ring return outside of WWE, with his Rockstar Spud persona heading back to PROGRESS Wrestling in September.

In a post shared on the PROGRESS Wrestling Instagram account, Spud was confirmed for shows on September 12 and 13 in Bournemouth and Birmingham, respectively:

1,769 days since the last time he had a match, nearly a decade since appearing in Progress, Rockstar Spud is coming back the the UK and he is lacing up the boots once again 👏🏼

One of the most entertaining wrestlers to come out of the UK, Spud has done so much in the wrestling industry.

A two time TNA X Division Champion and a seven time former WWE 24/7 Champion (as Drake Maverick), a General Manager, and since his last wrestling match in WWE, he has remained with the company in a backstage role.

But on the 12th and 13th of September, he makes an incredible return to the ring with PROGRESS!

We are delighted to have Spud as a part of the tour and cannot wait to welcome him back to the ring.

Earlier this year, it was reported that PROGRESS Wrestling had been acquired by former WWE stars Nikki Cross and Killian Dain (Nikki Storm and Big Damo, respectively).

Also set for a return to PROGRESS Wrestling is the former Aleister Black, with the star set to appear at three shows in the Odyssey Tour.

Spud last appeared in PROGRESS Wrestling back in May 2017, losing to Nathan Cruz in the Super Strong Style 16 Tournament qualifiers at Chapter 48.

There Aren’t Many Like Rockstar Spud

Standing at 5ft 4in (163cm) in height, Rockstar Spud was always likely to be the underdog in any situation, yet captivated fans by understanding exactly what was needed from him in any given situation.

A former TNA Wrestling star, he would become a two-time X Division Champion, a testament to his skill as an in-ring competitor, though would have an equally successful run as Dixie Carter’s chief of staff, showcasing his impeccable comic timing.

Such is the quality of the man known as Drake Maverick, that he has been rehired by WWE twice. First released in April 2020 due to COVID-19 related budget cuts, he would return shortly thereafter for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament. A second release would happen in November 2021, with budget cuts once again being at the heart of that decision, returning later to his current backstage role.

With PROGRESS Wrestling bringing in Rockstar Spud, hopefully with his Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi entrance them, fans will get the chance to witness one of the many sides that have made the star such a respected name.
