Another AEW Star Seemingly Preparing To Join WWE AEW/WWE

Another AEW star could be heading back to WWE after their current contract expires with a CMLL run imminent.

Andrade El Idolo is no stranger to WWE, having performed there as Andrade “Cien” Almas (or just Andrade).

He would request and be granted his release from the company in March 2021 making his AEW debut in June of that year.

Most recently seen in the Continental Classic, it looks like his time in AEW could be drawing to a close.

Under his AEW contract, Andrade El Idolo can work for other promotions such as CMLL, but under a WWE contract he likely wouldn’t be able to – by the sounds of it, he wants to get one more CMLL run in before joining WWE would rule him out from being able to do that.

Dave Meltzer spoke about Andrade’s future in AEW on Wrestling Observer Radio, saying:

“He’s going back to CMLL, not sure exactly what week but probably relatively soon. On Friday night’s Arena Mexico show they did a tease of him going back. He had talked to AAA about going back there, and decided to go to CMLL.

“I think he just wanted to do it because that’s where he started. Because there’s no real money, even though CMLL’s drawing big crowds, there’s no real money being paid by CMLL. And Andrade actually charges a lot for his appearances in Mexico, so I think it’s just something that he wants to do.

“And his deal is coming up relatively soon unless it’s extended or something because of time off for injuries or whatever, but he thinks that his deal’s up pretty soon. So he wanted to go back (to CMLL) in case he ends up going to WWE.

“He’s not made a decision on what he’s doing next, he’s not signed a new deal. But if he does go to WWE, he knows he can’t go back to Arena Mexico. (His AEW deal is up) he believes relatively soon. My impression is that it’s up relatively soon.”

During his time in WWE, Andrade El Idolo held the NXT Championship and the WWE United States Championship.

He has held multiple championships in CMLL, including the CMLL Universal Championship and a number of NWA championships. Championship gold has, so far, eluded Andrade El Idolo in AEW.

His latest match against Bryan Danielson, which was taped this past Tuesday, will air on this coming Saturday’s episode of AEW Collision.
