AJ Styles Reacts To Sami Zayn Losing Undisputed WWE Championship To CM Punk

AJ Styles has weighed in on CM Punk ending Sami Zayn’s first Undisputed WWE Championship reign at just nine days.

A little over a week after he finally earned the one title he’d been striving his entire career for, Sami Zayn saw his Undisputed WWE Champion cut short after just nine days, when CM Punk returned to take Cody Rhodes’ spot in the main event of this past Monday’s episode of Raw in Chicago, IL.

WWE’s decision to give Zayn such a short run as champion, and have CM Punk be the one to dethrone him – on what was his first TV appearance since the Raw after WrestleMania 42 – has certainly been a polarizing one among fans and within WWE itself.

Becky Lynch has claimed that Zayn was “robbed”, while others, like Je’Von Evans have expressed their happiness for Punk after winning his eighth world title.

The latest to throw in their own two cents is someone who knows both Punk and Zayn very well: AJ Styles, as he addressed the surprise title change on the latest episode of his Phenomenally Retro podcast.

While Styles said he doesn’t understand WWE’s decision, he is certainly willing to see how the situation pans out on SmackDown, saying:

“I don’t understand. And it’s not for me to understand, I get it. I didn’t write the show, I don’t know what’s happening. But I’m hoping there is an actual reason. And from what I saw on the internet, the backstage with Sami after the match, he’s pretty pissed off.

“Let’s see where this story goes before we start getting, mad about everything that’s going on. By the way, CM Punk looks like a million bucks right now.

“There is a story that’s happening, so before we get our panties in a wad and just be as negative as we (can), let’s see what happens, because this may be a transition in where Sami is a totally different character and that might be what we need. It might be another match to do.

Styles would then speculate what route WWE may go in next, as the company prepare for SummerSlam in three weeks time:

“What is the next match that we’re looking forward (to) with CM Punk? Is it him and Cody? Remember going back months ago, ‘Hey, if you want another (title shot) just ask.’

“This match happens again, I’m just throwing this out there, we’re 90% wrong on most of the stuff that we’re talking about. Is it Cody and freaking Punk, Sami comes out, Helluva Kicks both of them. Match is thrown out, there’s no winner. Sami’s pissed off Sami right now. And then it leads to the three-way, so let’s see where it goes is all I’m saying, before we start judging and being mad, even though I didn’t want a transitional champion, let’s see where it goes.”
