AEW
The Beach Break episode of Dynamite saw MJF lose the AEW World Championship to Kenny Omega, but that was reportedly not always the plan.
In a ‘Last Chance Match’ that would have seen a loss prevent him from challenging for AEW’s top prize again, Omega defeated MJF to become a two-time AEW World Champion.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has revealed that the original plan would have seen the match take place at AEW Redemption in Canada, the home country of Omega.
With the match moved to Florida, it appears that MJF was the one to push for the decision, taking it from pay-per-view to television in the process, however, it’s not clear what the reasoning for he change of plans was.
Meltzer stated:
“This match, and stipulation, where if Omega lost he could never challenge for the AEW title again for the rest of his career, was the plan for the 7/26 Redemption show in Montreal. The idea was Canada and the name of the show was Omega getting his last shot after two high-profile losses.
“It was pushed, believed to be by MJF, to get it moved to television. I was not given a reason why, but it doesn’t matter where the suggestion came from, that’s a major change and Tony Khan approved of it. So he must feel he’s got something PPV-worthy for Montreal on 7/26.”
What those plans may be are yet to be revealed, with AEW Redemption taking place on July 26 and only one match announced so far, with Thekla defending the Women’s World Championship against Willow Nightingale.
Addressing the start of his second title reign, Kenny Omega reflected on the legacy of MJF as champion.

Something PPV-Worthy?
There’s no doubt that MJF is at the top of the tree when it comes to AEW, whether he holds a championship or not, yet Dave Meltzer suggesting that there must be “something PPV-worthy” is likely to raise eyebrows.
Whether MJF pushed for the decision to move the match in Omega’s home country to television or not, it was a bold choice to take away a moment that would likely have lived on him memory for the fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal. That’s not to say that the reaction to Omega winning was muted at Beach Break, it’s just that any home win, be it country or city, can’t be overlooked.
“Something PPV-worthy” is what any fan would expect from any pay-per-view, so suggesting that would be the case for AEW Redemption should come as little surprise.
Where MJF lands on the road to Redemption remains to be seen, but he’s bound to have the fans eating out of the palm of his hand as he sets whatever goal he wishes. It could be as simple as a rematch for the title he lost, or it could be a new direction for a star that has been at the heart of AEW since day. Whatever it is, however, taking away from Omega in front of his own crowd would be likely be a bold choice.
