As of right now, Daniel Bryan’s future challengers for his WWE Championship are unknown, and although many are hoping it’ll be Kofi Kingston, that is reportedly not the plan.
Instead, Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio has said he has heard that it will be a returning wrestler, i.e someone who has been out injured, that will take that place.
Although he listed a number of names, from John Cena to Sami Zayn and Batista to the Undertaker, Dave feels the most likely opponent as of right now is Kevin Owens, who was last seen in a WWE ring in September 2018 due to double knee surgery.
His reasoning for this is that not only has Kevin Owens returned via vignettes shown on TV as a babyface, but his new gimmick is that he is “just one of the guys, eating junk food”. Bryan’s character hates junk food and the lifestyle that Owens has portrayed in his promos, so Meltzer feels this could be a subtle way of having the two men start a feud.
Furthermore, the two men have WrestleMania history, with Bryan teaming with Shane to take on Owens and Sami Zayn at last year’s WrestleMania. Now that the roles have reversed, we could see a very interesting dynamic in the match if this is the route WWE are planning on taking.
