Jeff Cobb is now known to WWE fans as JC Mateo, but an alternative potential name for the star has now emerged.
The former NJPW star made his WWE debut under the name Jeff Cobb at Backlash on May 10, 2025.
On the following episode of WWE SmackDown, Cobb was officially renamed “JC Mateo“.
JC Mateo, however, wasn’t the only name considered for the star, according to Dave Meltzer.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the name “JC Matanza”was one considered for Cobb.
It would have been an “insider reference” to the WWE star’s first major break in Lucha Underground, where he performed as Matanza Cueto.
Meltzer notes that the rights to the name were a bit fuzzy, with AAA an investor in Lucha Underground, but not the actual owners.
He further states that with WWE acquiring AAA, it didn’t include the Lucha Underground tapes or intellectual property.
Meltzer concludes by noting that it was claimed that Cobb himself wasn’t a particular fan of the suggested name change.
JC Mateo recently revealed the timeline for his departure from NJPW and signing with WWE.
