A former WWE star’s NJPW in-ring return has been confirmed, following his recent unannounced appearance for the company.
Having been let go by WWE in early-May, Jeff Cobb – fka JC Mateo in WWE – returned to NJPW during the August 16 G1 Climax 36 final event.
Following the United Empire defeating Unbound Co in six-man tag-team action, Cobb entered the ring and attacked his former teammate Callum Newman, aligning himself with the latter faction.
NJPW has now announced several matches for Jeff Cobb, the first of which being at the September 5 Road to Destruction event in Tochigi.
Jeff Cobb’s NJPW in-ring return will see him team with Shingo Takagi against Zane Jay and Callum Newman.
He is also set for tag-team action at the September 9, 10 and 13 Road to Destruction shows, ahead of his NJPW singles return at Destruction in Kobe.
At the September 27 special, Cobb will go one-on-one with Callum Newman.
NJPW shared the following preview for this bout:
“Also confirmed for Kobe, Jeff Cobb will go one on one with Callum Newman. At the G1 Final, Newman was primed to violently assault Daiki Nagai before being interrupted by Gedo.
“Bloody Hands said that he had brought someone who had arrived to ‘fix your attitude’, and that someone turned out to be the returning Cobb.
“When Cobb went on NJPW ‘hiatus’ in 2024, his abrupt departure saw Newman rocket himself to superstardom, but in far from ethical form. Now Cobb is back and looking to finish some business with the Prince.”
Jeff Cobb & Callum Newman notably won the IWGP Tag Team Championship together from Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi at Sakura Genesis in April 2025.
Their title reign lasted just nine days, with the duo relinquishing the gold following the announcement of Jeff Cobb’s NJPW departure.
Cobb’s last NJPW match saw him lose to Hiroshi Tanahashi at the April 19, 2025 Road to Wrestling Dontaku event. He made his WWE debut at Backlash the following month, aligning himself with the Bloodline/MFTs.
Wrestling as JC Mateo in WWE for just under a year, Cobb was moved to the alumni section of WWE’s roster page on May 2.
The returning NJPW star recently shared his honest thoughts on his WWE exit, noting that while he did think things could’ve went better for him, he will always be grateful for the experience.
