Kevin Owens has laid out his WWE goals since returning from injury after seventeen months at this year’s SummerSlam.

Night 2 of WWE SummerSlam saw Kevin Owens return, winning the Undisputed WWE Championship Number One Contendership Fatal Four-Way, setting him on a path to face CM Punk for the title on this week’s SmackDown.

Detailing how the process from being medically cleared for that return to the actual comeback was a quick process, Owens would look back on his career during a recent interview with FACES Magazine, saying:

“You know, when I was coming up in wrestling for like 15 years before being signed by WWE, I would always picture myself winning the WWE title, or wrestling at WrestleMania, or I would picture me and Sami Zayn winning the tag titles together, stuff like that. Or you know, when I first signed with WWE and I was in NXT, I would picture myself answering John Cena’s open challenge, and that’s actually exactly what happened. That’s what took me to the main roster. I would picture these things because those were my goals.

“But everything has changed, because obviously the last 10, 11 years in WWE, I had this incredible career and I got so many special moments, so many special matches, so many special memories. The last year and a half, I really didn’t picture any specific moment, like being in the ring with this guy, or winning a title or anything like that. It was really just about getting back in the ring at all and making sure I enjoy the time I have left.

“It was just this feeling where, if I go back, the one thing I’ll do more than anything is just make sure I get enjoy the ride. When you’re coming up in WWE, and you feel like you have so much to prove, so much to achieve, and obviously the more successful you are, the more money you’ll make for your family, and for your future… it almost feels like you have all of these responsibilities and there’s so much pressure, but that pressure is gone now.”

Recognized everything he has achieved so far, Owens would go on to reveal what he wants to do in the future as a WWE star, indicating he wants to “enjoy every second”, stating:

“I had this incredible career, I did things I never thought I would do, I did things that a lot of people will never get to do. Through it all, I would lose perspective, and sometimes I wouldn’t take the time to enjoy those moments as much as I should have. I don’t want to do that anymore. And now, every match I have, every show I’m on now, is a gift, because for a long time, I didn’t think it would happen again.

“So, all I want to do is just enjoy every second I can of it. Because, I don’t know, maybe there’s one more year, two more years, five more years, I really don’t know. But I’ll just try to make sure I keep as much as I can with me, so when it’s done, it’s done, but I have all these great things to look back on.”

Having been absent for such a long period, Owens would also address reuniting with colleagues on the roster and backstage upon his WWE return, commenting that “nothing’s changed“.

Enjoying The Ride

Formed in the early sixties, English rock band The Rolling Stones were touring all the way up the 2024, with a likelihood they would go out on the road again. Over sixty years as a band and performing as recently as a few days ago, they stand alongside a number of other music acts with member in their later years still willing and able to perform.

It’s not something unique to music either, with plenty of actors working well into the later years, along with entertainers in other fields, and professional wrestling is no different. After all, Ric Flair had his most recent “last match” back in July 2022 in his early 70s.

Kevin Owens is far from being the age of any of the aforementioned, but his comments that he wants to “enjoy every second” of his career is an insight into why many of these stars, regardless of field, likely continue to perform.

Sure, the money that they may make from a tour, appearance or whatever it may be helps, but there still has to be a love behind it and a hope to enjoy the experience. One can only imagine how much more gruelling it would have been if The Rolling Stones went on tour for twenty dates in 2024, only to hate every minute of it.

Whether Owens does call an end on his career in the next few years, he and the fans will have all the memories to fall back on.
