Following his return at SummerSlam in August of this year, Kevin Owens has detailed the behind-the-scenes changes.
Kevin Owens returned at SummerSlam on August 2, winning the Fatal Four-Way match to determine the number one contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Out of action due to a neck injury since early last year, the absence of Owens has seen him miss two WrestleManias, with an advertised match against Randy Orton at last year’s event being scrapped as a result.
Now very much back in the fold, Kevin Owens spoke to FACES Magazine about his experience since returning, saying:
“It really feels like I never left, like, I wasn’t off for 17 months. It’s right back to where I go to work, everything feels the same, getting back on the plane, getting to the hotel, and the next day going to the show, seeing the crew and everybody I was close with. Nothing’s changed; we picked up right where we left off, not only in the ring and in terms of with the fans and where I stand on SmackDown, but everything in between, like the people that I missed for 17 months, my friends at work that I didn’t get to see anymore. Not just my fellow wrestlers, but the crew and everybody behind the scenes that I got close with over the last 10 years.
“You know, when you don’t see people for so long, sometimes things change, but not at all. It’s literally, like, right back to where things were. It almost makes me feel like no time at all passed, that I wasn’t gone. But I was, for a long time, and that’s kind of a weird thing that everything feels so business as usual after not being there for so long.”
With their Undisputed WWE Championship match set for this week’s episode of SmackDown in Toronto, Owens would also address the personal feud he’s currently locked in with CM Punk.
A PLE-Level Match On Weekly Television?
There’s little doubt that CM Punk and Kevin Owens are set to put on a show when it comes to their upcoming Undisputed WWE Championship match in the challenger’s home country.
A first time encounter, the title defense being on SmackDown offers an opportunity to deliver a PLE-level match on the weekly show. Arguably, of course, all title defenses are PLE level, but this one feels different given the stakes when it comes to Owens and a home crowd.
The feud could play out beyond SmackDown, however, leading a rematch further down the line, particularly with WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event coming on September 6, followed by Money in the Bank on October 10 and Survivor Series: WarGames on November 28. Then there’s the upcoming Worlds Collide event on September 26, taking place in Chicago on the same day as AEW All Out, with CM Punk likely to make an appearance in his home city. Punk recently appeared on NXT, teaming with Myles Borne and Tavion Heights in a victory over Brad Baylor, Jackson Drake and Ricky Smokes of The Vanity Project.
Owens has the fan support behind him and it would be quite the creative choice to not give the star another top championship run, but whether that will be the result of a victory over Punk remains to be seen.
