Kevin Owens Returns At WWE SummerSlam 2026

Kevin Owens has made his return to in-ring action at WWE SummerSlam 2026 in Minneapolis tonight, Sunday, August 2.

Kicking off tonight’s show was set to be the #1 contender’s match between Finn Balor and Sami Zayn to determine CM Punk’s next challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship after he retained against Cody Rhodes yesterday.

However, Balor vs Zayn isn’t what happened, because reinstated SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis added not one but two participants to turn the match into a four-way.

First to be added was the man who defeated Aldis yesterday, GUNTHER.

And the second man added was Kevin Owens, returning to action from a broken neck after last wrestling all the way back in March 2025.

UPDATE: It was the returning Owens who scored the win, so he will be next to challenge Punk for the WWE Championship.

If Kevin Owens Can’t Reignite Fan Interest In WWE, Who Can?

WWE has had something of a monotonous 2026 so far, and criticism of the product and pressure on Chief Content Officer Triple H is ramping up.

Kevin Owens making his return is nothing less than a major boost – he’s someone who should be able to reignite fan interest in WWE TV and add some interest and excitement to the shows.

With that said, if things don’t turn around, and the fan sentiment stays the same even with Owens doing his thing, then that really does say a lot about the rut WWE finds itself in.

Kevin Owens being in the picture with names like CM Punk, Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, LA Knight and the other top stars should be an immediate shot in the arm, and if he can’t turn things around, WWE will need to take a real look at itself and what needs to change going forward.
