CM Punk’s Next WWE Championship Challenger After SummerSlam Confirmed

The next man to challenge CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship has been confirmed coming out of SummerSlam night two.

Night one saw Punk retain his WWE Title against Cody Rhodes thanks to a returning Randy Orton hitting Rhodes with an RKO, though Punk wasn’t actually aware that had happened.

Then on night two, Sami Zayn and Finn Balor were set for a #1 contender’s match to determine Punk’s next challenger, but that isn’t exactly what happened.

Instead, the returning Kevin Owens and GUNTHER were both added to the Zayn vs Balor match to make it a four-way.

In his first match in a year and a half, it was Owens who picked up the win, so he has earned the right to be the next challenger for CM Punk on a date yet to be announced.

Hopefully Not The End Of Sami Zayn In The WWE Main Event Picture

Kevin Owens is now the #1 contender for CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship, and hopefully that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Sami Zayn in the title picture.

Zayn has proven himself to be an incredibly valuable asset for WWE at main event level, not just over the past few months but when he’s found himself in that position over the past number of years as well.

His new allegiance with Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae does suggest he’ll have something to do on TV rather than fading into obscurity, but hopefully that team carries some weight instead of being reduced to undercard comedy.

There’s no reason why Zayn can’t be world champion again, so hopefully we haven’t seen the end of him at the top end of the card.

It’s definitely a possibility that Owens could win the WWE Title from Punk and spin off into a revamped rivalry with Zayn, this time for the top championship in the company.
