Internal Push For Star To Be Included In WWE World Heavyweight Championship #1 Contender’s Tournament

An update has emerged on a backstage push for a certain star to be included in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship #1 contender’s tournament.

As previously announced by WWE AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio, Roman Reigns will defend his World Heavyweight Title against a luchador on the September 14 edition of Raw in Mexico City.

This challenger will be determined by the ongoing #1 contender’s tournament, which has featured talent from Raw, SmackDown and AAA.

The first round of the tournament is now in the books, with Penta defeating Laredo Kid on the August 10 Raw and La Parka putting away Psycho Clown on the August 15 edition of AAA.

The final two first round matches took place on Monday’s (August 17) Raw show, with Dragon Lee defeating El Hijo de Dr Wagner Jr, and Rey Fenix pinning El Fiscal.

Per a new report from False Finish, Rey Mysterio pushed internally for El Fiscal to be included in the World Heavyweight Championship #1 contender’s tournament.

Both semifinal matches will happen on the August 24 Raw episode, with Penta set to face La Parka, and Dragon Lee taking on Rey Fenix.

The tournament final will air on the August 31 edition of Raw, which will be taped on August 28 in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the current lineup, it has been heavily predicted that Penta will win this match, given that he is the star with the highest profile on the main roster. Speculation was only fuelled during a recent AAA episode, where Penta cut a promo on Roman Reigns.

Rey Mysterio recently stated that he felt the best way for him to let up-and-coming luchadores show the world what they can do was for him to step aside and not compete in the tournament.

While speaking about the eventual World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns, Mysterio reminded fans that anything can happen in the WWE, and that titles have been “switched overnight” in the past.

Roman Reigns became World Heavyweight Champion at WrestleMania 42, defeating CM Punk for the gold. He most recently put the title on the line at SummerSlam, defeating Seth Rollins with what could end up being the final chapter in their rivalry.

The OTC is currently being advertised for Survivor Series WarGames, which is set to emanate from Daikin Park in Houston, Texas on November 28.
