A NXT star has addressed teaming with Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk, commenting on the experience.
CM Punk made a rare NXT appearance during the August 15 house show in Petersburg, Virginia.
During this non-televised event, the top titleholder teamed with NXT Tag Team Champions Myles Borne and Tavion Heights to defeat Brad Baylor, Jackson Drake and Ricky Smokes of the Vanity Project.
Heights has now taken to Instagram to share a photo of him, Borne and CM Punk backstage, all holding their gold.
Noting that it was a privilege to learn from the Undisputed WWE Champion, Heights wrote:
This is a game of tradition, of passing down the knowledge it takes to cement oneself amongst the stars. Had the opportunity to learn from legend @cmpunk … what a privilege
Heights and Borne won the NXT Tag Team Championship on the August 4 episode, from Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes of the Vanity Project.
Myles Borne is a double champion, having also held the NXT North American Championship since February 24, when he won the title from Ethan Page.
CM Punk won the Undisputed WWE Championship during his return match on the July 6 Raw episode in his hometown of Chicago.
He has defended the gold in one televised match so far, defeating Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam following interference from Randy Orton.
Punk has since offered Rhodes a title rematch at a time of his choosing, however the American Nightmare is currently preparing to face The Viper at Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6.
The Undisputed WWE Champion will next defend his championship against Kevin Owens at this week’s SmackDown episode in Toronto, Canada.
This comes after Kevin Owens’ return at SummerSlam after 17 months away, with Owens winning a #1 contender’s match also featuring Finn Balor, Sami Zayn and GUNTHER.
While the likes of Grayson Waller have returned to NXT for longer stays, it would benefit the brand to have more top champions like CM Punk visit the developmental brand from time to time, to work with the up-and-coming talent.
It was heavily speculated following Punk’s return to WWE that he’d officially take on a role at the Performance Center, given his eagerness to give back to the industry.
One star who is currently temporarily filling in as a Performance Center coach/NXT producer is AJ Styles, who has helped to produce several high-profile NXT matches recently.
