WWE’s Kevin Owens Comments On NXT Star Tristan Angels’ Character: ‘It’s Basically Ripped Off Hunter Hearst Helmsley Completely, But That’s Fine’

Kevin Owens has shared his honest thoughts on another WWE talent’s gimmick, arguing that it ripped off a top name’s old character completely.

With Kevin Owens being a mentor in season three of WWE LFG, a clip featuring Owens from the upcoming episode has now been shared.

Ahead of the June 14 episode, WWE took to Twitter with a clip of Kevin Owens giving advice to Tristan Angels (fka Nathan Angel) and Dorian Van Dux (fka Mike D Vecchio, Mike Derudder) as they plan for their match.

The clip featured Kevin Owens’ comments on Angels’ character, which he compared to Triple H’s “Hunter Hearst Helmsley” character.

Owens said:

“I really like Nathan’s act. It’s basically ripped off Hunter Hearst Helmsley completely, but that’s fine. It has been over 20 years, I think it’s okay to steal the guy’s entire identity.

“If you’re going to steal anyone’s old identity, Triple H is pretty good.”

With Owens prefacing that he enjoyed the character, and with Angels having brought this character to NXT TV since filming for WWE LFG, it appears that Kevin Owens’ comments were meant in a tongue-in-cheek way, or at least in a way which wasn’t serious enough for Angels to scrap the character.

Being a veteran of the business, Kevin Owens will understand that it is very rare to have an actually unique idea in pro-wrestling.

Tristan Angels and Hunter Hearst Helmsley are just two examples of the “regal” stock character, which itself could be argued to be an offshoot of the “pretty boy” character we’ve seen the likes of Tyler Breeze, Dolph Ziggler, Shawn Michaels, and countless others give their takes on, following Gorgeous George popularising the role during the Golden Age of pro-wrestling.

Similarly with moves, if a wrestler puts their own spin on a character, it will feel like their own, rather than a replication.

Angels wrestled his first televised match on WWE NXT TV on the May 19 episode, defeating Romeo Moreno in singles action.
