WWE Speed Champion Lexis King has opened up about being a second generation wrestler while discussing his faction Birthright.
A number of multi-generation wrestlers are currently aligned with one another in NXT, including Uriah Connors – the son of Fit Finlay – Arianna Grace – the daughter of Santino Marella – Charlie Dempsey – the son of William Regal – and Lexis King – the son of Brian Pillman.
Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, King stated that he feels their group works because the audience knows who they all are, and “people hate nepotism”.
He explained:
“‘Everyone knows who you are. Everybody knows you’re Brian Pillman’s son. Everybody knows this is (William) Regal’s son, this is Fit Finlay’s son, that he is a fourth generation wrestler, Uriah Connors. Why are we not leaning into that?’
“I think that was the ultimate powder keg for us, to just say Hey, the fans know who you are, there’s heat there, people hate nepotism. They cry nepotism.

Believing that the name opens the door, but it’s their work ethics that keep them in the room, King continued:
“‘Oh, they only got this because of that.’ You know what? We did. Thank you. But it opened the door, and what did we do when we got through the door? We started working harder than anybody in the room, because you carry that shadow, you carry that weight, the office makes you work harder.
“The boys hold you to a higher standard. You can’t just show up, you have a reputation. You have an expectation and you have to work twice as hard just to get to the same level that your parents did.
“Our fathers were legends, my father passed away at his peak, so he will be remembered even greater than perhaps he was. So for people to tell us it’s easy, sure, keep thinking that.
“I’m just going to keep showing up on your television and having great matches, and defending my title.”

Lexis King’s point appears to ring true, with not every second or third generation making it to the WWE main roster, or rising to the heights of Charlotte Flair or Dominik Mysterio.
Rey Mysterio recently stated in an interview that he did feel there was a bit of awkwardness surrounding Dominik Mysterio prior to his 2022 heel turn, and that the best thing for him was being detached from his father and embracing the “Dirty Dom” character.
Meanwhile, following Mysterio indicating that his daughter Aalyah is preparing for her own WWE career, NXT General Manager Robert Stone has shared an intriguing message for the daughter of the legendary luchador.
