Rey Mysterio Identifies Pre-WWE Reason Why Dominik Mysterio Eventually Turned Against Him: ‘I Never Pressured Him To Follow My Lead Or My Footsteps’

During his time working for WrestleTalk.com he has written and published over 4,000 news and feature articles covering events and happenings from WWE, AEW, TNA and a variety of international and independent wrestling promotions.

Rey Mysterio has identified why he believes Dominik Mysterio turned against him in WWE and evolved into the heel character he is now.

While he first made his debut in WWE in 2020 as a clean-cut babyface, flanking his Hall of Fame father, Dominik Mysterio has since evolved into one of WWE’s top heels.

His path down the road he’s currently on in WWE began at Clash at the Castle in September 2022, when Dom attacked but Edge (Adam Copeland) and his own father Rey Mysterio in favor of joining The Judgment Day, however, according to Rey the reason for Dominik’s choices may precede that night.

Speaking to The Undertaker & Michelle McCool on Six Feet Under, Rey said the only reason he can think of for why Dominik turned out how he did is Rey deciding not to insist that his children follow in his footsteps into wrestling, with Dominik instead coming to the decision to do so on his own.

Rey explained:

“I think the only thing that I can possibly pinpoint is I never pressured him to follow my lead or my footsteps. They (Dominik & Aalyah) had the option to pick whatever sport, whatever they wanted to do in life.

“I think with Dom there came a point where he was 19, had already graduated. Was going to South Western College, which was just masking whatever he was doing. Apparently he wanted to play football but he was overweight, he got lazy after graduating.

“I pulled him aside I said ‘Bro, what are you doing with your life? You have to get something going.’ And that’s when he asked me, he goes ‘I wanna see if I can make it in wrestling.’

“So, the fact that it came randomly from him and I never insisted, I think that has to speak for the individual that he is now. How he just soaked in, embraced it and said ‘I’m gonna run with this, this is how I feel.’”

Rey Mysterio “Never Would Have Thought” Dominik Would Gain Success He Has In WWE Thus Far

Dominik Mysterio’s pre-heel turn run in WWE had some fans questioning his future in the company, as his tag team run alongside his father failed to allow him to showcase much of his personality that he would later become known for in The Judgment Day and beyond.

During his chat with The Undertaker and Michelle McCool, Rey even admitted himself that his son’s success, just over five years into his career has surprised him.

Rey said:

“Every now and then when he needs advice he’ll ask me. He listens when he wants to listen, I can tell already. But overall I never would have thought he would have gained the success he’s gained in such a short amount of time, five years.”
