With a victory over Nikkita Lyons, Lizzy Rain has revealed she thought that she’d never get to WWE after her first televised NXT match.

The April 28 episode of WWE NXT saw Lizzy Rain make her in-ring televised debut after being introduced to fans in a vignette on last week’s episode.

Rain was one of a number of new NXT stars to make their debut on last night’s episode, with the London-born star sharing her thoughts in the wake of the match.

Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Rain shared her elation and an insight into the journey that had brought her to WWE, saying:

“I’m on top of the world. I don’t think I have any words. I do have words because I’m obviously speaking, but I’m overwhelmed.

“It’s just what I’ve always wanted. What I’ve worked the last few years on the indies for. What my heartbreak was for when I had knee surgery. It just means so much.

“To be on WWE TV, it just absolutely blows my mind. I just thought I’d never get there, hands on heart, I thought I’d never get there. And here I bloody am, so it’s very surreal.

“And Nikkita (Lyons), I was so happy I got to wrestle her for my first match, I couldn’t have asked for a better opponent for my first match.”

During her time in Japan, the former Rayne Leverkusen injured her knee, believing it to be “a slight knock”, only to later discover it was a torn ACL. Having been wrestling with that injury for months during 2023, she would undergo surgery to repair the damage.

Rain would also explore her own background and why she felt that WWE wasn’t necessarily in her future, stating:

“You know when you’re a kid, and you ask your mum, ‘Mum, I want to be an astronaut. That’s what it was like, ‘Mum, I want to be a wrestler.’ And they’re like, “yeah, sweetheart, try another thing.’

“It just feels so far-fetched, especially being from the UK; it just felt like such a far-fetched journey. Why would I ever get to the WWE? I’m from London, I’m not in America.

“I thought there were so many things going against me that I didn’t really have a look in. I started a bit older, I’m not a kid who started wrestling at 16, I started at 23.

“Just all these things stacked against you, I thought I’ll do the indies, I’ll try and get there, obviously that’s what I’ve worked for whilst I’ve been an indie wrestler. It just feels like a dream job; it obviously is a dream job, and only less than one percent of people get to achieve their dream job.”

Prior to her televised debut, Rain had a untelevised dark match on the April 14 WWE NXT, beating Layla Diggs, having also done so at a recent house show.

With the late Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr as her uncle, Rain would also reveal that she was inspired by the metal music star.

Shifting Tides In WWE

In the post-WrestleMania 42 landscape of WWE, it was a likely opportunity for stars of NXT to be called up to the main roster, opening up new opportunities with brand switches affecting all three weekly broadcast shows.

New opportunities, however, often come with changes elsewhere, and it should not have been a surprise that WWE would release a number of stars, including those associated with NXT.

Lizzy Rain arrives in that new landscape, alongside the aforementioned other names to have made their debut, and it can only be hoped that the fans latch onto her with the attention new stars deserve.

NXT has proven itself to be a breeding ground for main roster stars since its earliest days, but the path to Raw and SmackDown is far from guaranteed.

With Rain joining Tristan Angels, Will Kroos, Kam Hendrix and Tate Wilder on a show that also saw former NJPW star EVIL make his debut, all eyes are likely to be on these stars to see what their future holds.
