A new report has revealed the backstage news on how Mercedes Mone potentially signing with WWE could have altered creative plans.
At AEW Big Business, Mercedes Mone made her long awaited debut with All Elite Wrestling. It was later revealed that the former Sasha Banks had been signed with the promotion since January 2024.
The signing took place after initial discussions with WWE for a potential return for “The CEO” fell apart at the end of 2023.
Prior to her AEW signing, many fans speculated that Mone would eventually return to WWE to aid Bayley in her ongoing storyline with Damage CTRL ahead of WrestleMania 40.
Fightful Select (subscription required) provided an update, noting that Mercedes Mone/Sasha Banks coming back to aid Bayley wasn’t actually the working plan dating back to the fall of 2023.
The Damage CTRL split has been planned for months, dating back to when Charlotte Flair was still active in the ring.
The original plan would have saw Flair come to the aid of Bayley against Damage CTRL following her babyface turn after Royal Rumble 2024.
However, Charlotte Flair suffered a torn ACL injury in a match against Asuka on the December 8 episode of WWE SmackDown.
The report notes that one source mentioned that Mercedes Mone signing with WWE could have potentially changed things. However, that wasn’t the working plan for the Damage CTRL storyline and things didn’t get far enough for advanced creative pitches for Mone.
Bayley will challenge Damage CTRL’s IYO SKY for the WWE Women’s Championship on WrestleMania Sunday, while Damage CTRL’s Dakota Kai, Asuka and Kairi Sane will face Bianca Belair, Naomi and Jade Cargill on WrestleMania Saturday.
