With eight WWE Intercontinental Championship reigns to his name, The Miz has reflected on restoring the prestige to the title he loves.

From his first WWE Intercontinental Championship reign which started in July 2012 to his most recent that ended at WrestleMania 34 in 2018, The Miz has set the standard for the current roster when it comes to runs with that title.

A combined 592 days across those eight reigns, The Miz has recently spoken about his love of the WWE Intercontinental Championship while speaking to Complex, revealing:

“That was the title I always loved as a kid growing up. And now to be able to hold that title, but bring it back to the relevance that it once had, because it fell apart. It fell apart for years on end.

“Then I feel like, and I want to pat myself on the back, I don’t want to, but I’m going to. I feel like when I took hold of that title we brought it back to where it was back in the 80s and 90s.”

“And now, even to this day we’ve been able to keep it there with the Intercontinental Champions that we have… GUNTHER, I mean, think about his reign as the Intercontinental Champion.

“I mean, that was something truly special, and it brought him now to where he is today, where he’s just retiring legends, literally, John Cena, AJ Styles. It’s crazy to me.”

The Miz is has the most combined WWE Intercontinental Championship reigns of all the stars on the current roster. Standing at eight reigns to date, the WWE star will equal Chris Jericho should he successfully contest the title one more time.

The current WWE Intercontinental Champion is Penta, having beaten Dominik Mysterio, bringing the Judgment Day member’s second reign to an end.

The interview would also see The Miz share his thoughts on how he’d like to see his WWE legacy remembered and his ongoing quest for respect.

A Stepping Stone To Superstardom

Introduced in 1979, the WWE Intercontinental Championship is arguably one of the most important titles in the company’s storied history, with many of its holders going on to world champion success.

Undeniable a stalwart of championship contention, the Intercontinental Champion and the WWE Championship are the two titles to have had the longest periods of activity in WWE, although the United States Championship, brought in through the acquisition of WCW is an older title than its International brethren.

Typically held by stars considered to be workhorses, the title stands as a testament to the future World Champion picture, with the likes of Chris Jericho, Triple H, The Miz, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart among the many recognizable names to have held the title during their careers.

Indeed, during his retirement year, John Cena was able to claim the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his WWE career, defeating Dominik Mysterio on the November 10 episode of Raw and becoming a Grand Slam Champion as a result.

There can be little doubt that the relatively newer stars to have held the title over recent years – Penta, as the current Intercontinental Champion, Dominik Mysterio, Bron Breakker, and GUNHTER – are all World Championship bound, with Jey Uso and Sami Zayn, both of whom have been in WWE longer, both potential candidates down the line.

An illustrious history, with ninety-four holders to date, whoever holds the WWE Intercontinental Championship is in the company of giants, something that will continue well into the future.
