Charlotte Flair Opens Up About Current WWE Role: ‘I Think There’s A Bigger Picture’

Charlotte Flair has opened up about her current role in WWE, which sees her as a tag team star alongside Alexa Bliss.

In June of last year, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss became “Allies of Convenience”, teaming together in a partnership would see them challenge for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 42 back in April.

While titles may not be on the card for Flair at the moment, the star would comment on her current run while speaking to Busted Open Radio‘s Dave LeGreca, saying:

“The best year of my career, and I’ve never been more versatile.”

With Charlotte Flair currently in a tag team with Bliss, the star would open up about her current role in WWE, saying:

“Do I agree that I should be a main attraction? Yes.

“Do I think that I should be looked at and marketed like that champion that you’re thinking? Yes, but I think being in this tag, whether it’s slow or not for some of my fans, I think there’s a bigger picture and that I’m going to keep working towards, keep fighting for, that I see, and you’re going to get that, like, that’s the champion we know.”

Addressing the current team, Flair would suggest that is allowing her new opportunities to stretch her wings as a star and a character, explaining:

“Me being able to be comedic with Lexi or in the tag, or working with so many different character and, I don’t want to say ‘underdog’, but I’m kind of like… am I kind of like an underdog right now?

“But, I think it’s just showing that vulnerability and show that “hey, I don’t have a main…’ like, I’m interesting and I think people just got like “how do you relate to being great?” But they just didn’t realize, like, what it took and the sacrifice to like “hey, I’m a character, but I was actually really good at being bad” and it was almost too good at being bad, where you believe that was… I lived the gimmick… not like my dad, but in a way like wasn’t versatile either on social.”

The character work has seemingly not come easy to Flair, with the star reflecting on an honest promo that didn’t get the reaction she perhaps expected, reflecting:

“There was this promo in the WrestleMania (39) build with Rhea (Ripley), and it was in Vegas, and I had this awful, ugly red outfit on, and I really went out there trying to be like “hey, I have insecurities. I feel this way or I’ve dealt with that”, in a much shorter version, and they started booing me because I felt like anytime I tried to open up, how do you see this girl, the daughter of Ric Flair, multiple championships, main events, all these different things, and you see underdogs who don’t have that and you’re sitting there being like “feel sorry for me.”

When it comes to fan support, however, LeGreca would note how she came across in WWE Unreal, with Flair sharing a story of how Bully Ray came across to comment that the star dressed in ‘regular clothing’ is how the fans get her, which has led to the star embracing a new, less glam look, while staying true to her character.

Flair and Bliss were recently joined by Tatum Paxley at last week’s episode of SmackDown, with the new call-up sharing her thoughts on the team in post-show comments.

Living The Gimmick

Expectations for always going to be high for the daughter of the legendary Ric Flair.

Signing a developmental deal in May 2012, Flair would make her way to NXT, becoming a two-time Women’s Champion on that brand, before being called up to the main roster in July 2015 and being called a “revolution” by Stephanie McMahon as she stood alongside Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks.

Indeed, the former WWE Divas Champion would be a herald for the ‘Women’s Revolution’ and go on to be the first WWE Raw Women’s Champion, holding that title a total of six times to date. Championships would follow on SmackDown, with Flair being a seven-time Women’s Champion on that brand.

Women’s Tag Team Championship reigns also feature in the impressive history of Flair, having held the title with Alexa Bliss andAsuka previously, yet it is her singles history for which she is likely well known.

Flair describing herself as having “lived the gimmick” is an accurate description, with The Queen very much embracing the glamor that the role suggests, along with the distance from those she considers beneath her. It can feel that her opponents have had to rise to her level, yet they have often done this, disrupting her dominance until she is ready to rise again.

Very much like Cody Rhodes or Roman Reigns, the women’s roster needs a star that can be the target for others, and just like her top male counterparts, Flair has demonstrated the range to be devastating or disarming, fierce or fun and everything in between.
