Celebrity Guest Set For WWE Return

A celebrity guest is set for a WWE return, having previously appeared on a recent episode of NXT during a tag team match.

The June 23 episode of WWE NXT saw TikTok star Matt Mathews assist Hank & Tank in a victory over BirthRight.

With that appearance in the record books, Mathews is now heading to WWE Raw, officially confirmed for an appearance on a future episode.

The announcement was shared in a post on the official WWE Twitter account confirming that Mathews will be on the September 7 show, tweeting:

“Don’t miss #WWERaw when @matt_mathews appears live!”

At the time of writing, it isn’t known how Mathews will be used on the show, although he is far from a stranger in being a distraction at ringside, leading to altercations with Stacks and Lexis King.

Mathews is a comedian, musician and photographer who gained popularity through his farm-themed TikTok video.

The September 7 episode of WWE Raw emanates from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Illinois, with the official listing for the event showing Seth Rollins, Oba Femi, Liv Morgan, Dominik Mysterio, Sol Ruca, and Penta as “Featured Superstars”.

The crossover between celebrities and WWE is far from a recent thing, although the nature of the guests has changed over the decades.

While past eras would have seen mainstream musicians, actors and athletes present on WWE programming, more recently a shift has seen a number of social media influencers among those to appear.

Logan Paul is perhaps the most successful of the influencer generation, parlaying his popularity on social media into a full-time wrestling career that has seen praise from his peers from the early days of his career.

More recently, fellow influencer IShowSpeed saw praise ahead of his WrestleMania 42 match, with those words coming from LA Knight, the star the streamer would face at the April 18 Night 1 show. For Speed, he would himself reluctantly teaming with The Vision (Logan Paul & Austin Theory) in a loss to Knight & The Usos.

Not all recent crossovers have been as successful as the world of IShowSpeed, with Travis Scott and WWE having a “full falling out“.

With reports that Michael Chandler has been spotted at the WWE Performance Center, fans could be about to see the debut of another celebrity, this time from the UFC. Add to this the long-rumoured debut of Tom Brady, an NFL star who previously criticized WWE athletes as “cute”, and there’s plenty of opportunity for celebrity guests to find a home, for however long, in WWE.
