Former WWE Star Weighs In On Roman Reigns, Addresses ‘Overrated’ Claims

A former WWE star has weighed in on the recent argument that World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns is an ‘overrated’ talent.

Recently, 83 Weeks podcast co-host Conrad Thompson described Roman Reigns as “probably the most overrated main eventer in WWE history.”

Speaking on Instagram, Jinder Mahal stated that Reigns is far from overrated, though he conceded a past iteration may fit that description, saying:

“Roman Reigns is not overrated.

“Name anybody (who) can compete with Roman Reigns in terms of presentation, in terms of psychology, in terms of communication, in terms of aura.

“Perhaps pre-pandemic Roman Reigns, you can call overrated. But, this version? No way.”

Roman Reigns Remains The Head Of The Table

When it comes to the modern landscape of WWE, Roman Reigns has carved out a niche as one of a small number of top stars, whether he holds a championship or not.

Existing in the rarefied air of the likes of CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, Reigns may has been a fixture in WWE signing his first contract in 2010 and currently enjoying a status as a part-time performer, very much aware that the end of his in-ring career is approaching.

Mahal’s comment that a pre-pandemic Reigns was, perhaps, overrated is a pertinent one. Following the break up of The Shield, Reigns would find his way into the main event picture, eventually winning the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series in 2015, only to lose it to Sheamus moments later with a Money in the Bank contract cash-in, recapturing it on the follow night’s Raw.

For some, it felt like Reigns was being stuff down the fans’ throats during that period, with Reigns continuing to be a main event presence, stepping away during the COVID-19 pandemic era, with his leukaemia diagnosis playing its part in that decision.

The Tribal Chief era would follow, starting late in the Thunderdome era of WWE, leading to the creation of The Bloodline and the rebirth of Reigns as a top star. Compared to the pre-pandemic era, however, The Bloodline rejuvenated Reigns for many fans and, despite the fact that he remained an all-encompassing presence, there was something arguably much more acceptable about the way he was being used, particularly from 2021 onwards.

There can be too much of a good thing, though, and with Reigns carrying a championship despite a much-reduced in-ring schedule, matches are few and far between, with Survivor Series: WarGames recently announced as his next appearance after October’s WWE Money in the Bank.

Whether Reigns is “overrated” is a topic that is unlikely to have a satisfactory answer on either side of the debate, yet remains a topic that fans and critics explore on a regular basis.
