WWE Divisional Breakdown: SmackDown Live, May 15, 2018

Women’s Division

The women’s division was given both a match and a major announcement on this show. The match saw Becky Lynch defeat both members of Absolution (R.I.P) to qualify for Money in the Bank. It was not great but was good enough for free television, and the right person won. Becky needed this win following a lackluster year and a half. It’s early, but she’s my pick for the ladder match. Especially because…

Asuka is getting a shot at Carmella’s title. In the other women’s segment, the “Royal Mellabration,” Paige announced that Carmella would indeed have to defend her championship against the ‘Empress of Tomorrow’ at the pay-per-view. This is kind of troubling. First of all, I don’t think Carmella should lose the title yet. They made the investment by giving her the championship, and I think they ought to let it play out over the course of several months. On the other hand, Carmella should absolutely not beat Asuka. Beating Charlotte is one thing, but if you have her win against the once-dominant Asuka, you all but kill the aura and mystique surrounding the latter. Please find a way out of this, WWE.
