A new report has revealed an update on plans for WWE NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov to be pushed in the same vein as GUNTHER.
Ilja Dragunov has become the face of the WWE NXT brand and the reigning NXT Champion since winning the gold at No Mercy 2023 last year. He has grown and evolved since signing with the company in 2019.
Dragunov’s legendary rivalry with GUNTHER showed WWE exactly what he was capable of and has many fans questioning when he will make the jump to the main roster.
Fightful Select (subscription required) provided an update, noting that the belief of several in NXT is that WWE see Ilja Dragunov in the same vein as GUNTHER.
The report notes that the belief is that WWE will push Dragunov in the same fashion they have pushed “The Ring General” once he makes his way to the main roster.
While in NXT, Dragunov has been a constant source of praise with NXT producers needing to give him very little direction. This is something that is unique to Ilja in comparison to the current roster of the brand.
One NXT talent noted that their belief is that Dragunov elevated anyone he steps in the ring with, and he has an incredible mind for the business.
The report also notes that Dragunov is considered incredibly easy to work with and “is a wonderful person to be around.”
As previously reported, the report further reveals an update on plans for Dragunov after NXT Stand & Deliver.
Ilja Dragunov will defend the NXT Championship against Tony D’Angelo at NXT Stand & Deliver 2024 on April 6. For the full lineup for the show, click here.
WrestleTalk will provide any further updates on Ilja Dragunov’s WWE main roster status when they become available.
