WWE Star Retires At SummerSlam 2026?

A retirement match may have taken place at WWE SummerSlam 2026 night one today, Saturday, August 1 emanating from Minneapolis.

Nick Aldis made his WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam today, entering to Oasis for his match against GUNTHER.

Aldis, a former World Heavyweight Champion in both TNA and the NWA, joined WWE in 2023 but hadn’t wrestled for the company until tonight.

He started out in a backstage role as a producer before then becoming a TV personality as the General Manager of SmackDown while resuming his producer duties as well.

Tonight was his first ever WWE match and his first match overall in close to three years.

Notably, Aldis was billed as the National Treasure and made his entrance to Morning Glory by Oasis – a rare instance of WWE licensing a mainstream song to be used as an entrance theme.

Throughout the match, which went about 11 minutes, there were repeated “You’ve still got it” chants from the crowd directed towards Aldis.

Aldis’ wife, WWE legend Mickie James, was at ringside and featured as GUNTHER got in her face mid-match.

Ultimately, despite it being an impressive outing from Aldis and an even match, it was GUNTHER who picked up the win with the sleeper hold as Aldis tapped out.

James and their son Donovan got in the ring with Aldis after the match as he was once again serenaded by “You’ve still got it” chants and Oasis’ Morning Glory.

Commentary on numerous occasions alluded to the possibility of GUNTHER ending another career tonight and this potentially being Aldis’ final match, though it wasn’t outright confirmed that that’s the case.

It was certainly something that was mentioned as a heavy possibility though, and would obviously play into GUNTHER’s run as the ‘Career Killer.’

Another WWE Career Ended By GUNTHER?

Nick Aldis potentially becomes the latest name added to the list of those who have been retired over the past year-plus by GUNTHER.

GUNTHER has defeated Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles in their final WWE matches, and now Nick Aldis might be in the same boat.

There was no outright confirmation that this was Aldis’ last match, but GUNTHER did speak in the build-up about how ending Aldis’ career was his plan.

Aldis also said in interviews leading up to WWE SummerSlam that he was treating this as a one-off match and hadn’t heard that there was anything planned beyond tonight.

He proved tonight that he can still go in the ring, so there’s no reason why he can’t wrestle some more, but his excellent performances as SmackDown General Manager, and the fact it adds to GUNTHER’s retirement record, means this being his final WWE match – despite it being his first – might be the way things pan out.
