WWE Star Says SummerSlam 2026 Match Came As ‘Total Shock’, Didn’t Have Sit Down Talks With Triple H

A WWE star has admitted that plans to compete at SummerSlam 2026 came as a “total shock” to him.

This weekend will see WWE’s second biggest premium live event of the year, as SummerSlam takes over the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While matches such as Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk, Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns are being billed as the marquee contests of the two-night event, there is arguably as much anticipation among fans for Nick Aldis’ big WWE in-ring debut against GUNTHER.

Since Aldis arrived in WWE in a non-wrestling role in 2023, those aware of his in-ring experience have been crying out for the company to allow him lace up his boots once again.

Speaking about his in-ring return with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Nick Aldis admitted that, despite his wife Mickie James and Randy Orton warning him to “stay ready” for a possible WWE debut, the company’s plans for him to fight GUNTHER at SummerSlam still came as a “total shock.”

When asked if he always had the thought a WWE match was potentially in his future, Aldis said:

“Yeah, might be, but that doesn’t mean that this one didn’t come as a total shock, because it did.

“You know what’s funny? There were two people when there were other moments where it looked like that might be on the cards. Two people that said to me, ‘You have to stay somewhat ready because they’re not gonna give you three months’ notice. You’re gonna get like a couple weeks.’ One was Mickie (James), and one was Randy (Orton).

“Because last year at WrestleMania, a lot of people felt like maybe that was a possibility. Was never discussed with me, you know, and even Randy even kind of leaned toward it on TV. But like I said, I try to make a point to stay out of it in that respect. I didn’t lobby for anything. But I remember Randy talking to me at WrestleMania and kind of saying, you know, you need to stay ready, because it’s gonna happen, and they’re gonna do it like that. It’s gonna come out of nowhere.”

Aldis would note that a match with Orton was a possibility for WrestleMania 41, but he’s glad that his actual WWE debut against GUNTHER has some “real meat on the bone”:

“Yeah, it could have been. I mean, (it) could have been anyone (against Orton at WrestleMania 41).

“It was a great spot for Joe Hendry. I thought it was a really entertaining segment. It was a great piece of business for WrestleMania. But had they decided, hey, it’s there, that would have been great. But I will say, this has real meat on the bone.

“With Randy, that would have been cool, but it would have been very much like a sort of, oh, hey, let’s have a wrestling match kind of thing. It would have been nice, but it would have felt very sort of, you know. This has some genuine emotion.”

Further discussing the unexpected nature in which his WWE SummerSlam plans came about, Aldis noted that there was never a sit down conversation with Triple H and other WWE creative higher-ups about his readiness to return to the ring.

Aldis revealed:

“Sure (is he feeling pressure ahead of SummerSlam). But I take confidence in the fact that they looked at everything, every possibility, and decided this was where the money was. I suppose I was a little perplexed at first at how casual everyone seemed to be.”

“Hunter (Triple H), Ed Koskey, Michael (Hayes). I was waiting for the sit-down, ‘Are you sure you can do this? Are you ready?’ It never came.”
