This week on Smackdown, Kevin Owens turned heel on Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, cementing himself as the first challenger for Kofi Kingston’s WWE Championship. However, it was reported today that Kevin Owens is only in this spot because Daniel Bryan is injured and cannot compete at Money In The Bank.
However, Dave Meltzer has reported in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that when WWE learnt Bryan was injured and would be unable to compete, they considered other options as well as Kevin Owens.
Meltzer has said that WWE not only considered having Randy Orton or Daniel Bryan’s ally Rowan feud with Kingston, but an idea was pitched of one of Drew McIntyre or Baron Corbin drafted to Smackdown to feud with the New Day star. It is also reported that there were talks of having the United States Champion Samoa Joe stay on Smackdown to feud with Kofi in Bryan’s absence.
However, based on last week’s angle, it is clear that WWE has gone with Kevin Owens as their man, and whilst nothing has been confirmed, it seems likely that Kofi Kingston will be defending his WWE title against Kevin Owens at the upcoming Money In The Bank pay-per-view.
