The main event for the second night (January 5) of Wrestle Kingdom 16 has been determined.
In headline match for the first night of action, Kazuchika Okada defeated Shingo Takagi to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. This marks Okada’s first reign with the gold, since the official unification of the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Titles.
Okada will defend his new title against Will Ospreay in the main event of the January 5 show. It had previously been announced that Ospreay would challenge either Takagi or Okada for the gold on the second night of Wrestle Kingdom 16.
Ospreay and Okada have history, with the British star joining the NJPW CHAOS faction in 2016 upon The Rainmaker’s recommendation. Ospreay turned on Okada during their G1 Climax bout in 2020, forming the United Empire faction.
Okada defeated Ospreay in a singles match during the first night of Wrestle Kingdom 15, in 2021.
After winning the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship from inaugural titleholder Kota Ibushi in April 2021, Ospreay was stripped of the gold in May due to a neck and back injury. Since returning to action, Ospreay has claimed that he is the true champion.
Here is the announced card for the January 5 show:
