WWE made interesting news during Friday’s (January 7) episode of SmackDown, when they announced that current IMPACT Knockouts Champion Mickie James would be a part of the 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble match.
This came as a surprise to many, as WWE has previously not worked with talent that are contracted to other companies, but this time WWE mentioned IMPACT and the Knockouts Championship by name on air.
Per Ringside News – which has had several backstage reports confirmed by the likes of Fightful and Dave Meltzer in recent times – WWE no longer has an issue with talent being contracted to other companies when working with them.
The report notes that when John Laurinaitis reached out to James to be a part of the Rumble, she told him that she was contracted to IMPACT. A source noted that Vince McMahon ‘doesn’t care’, and even okayed mentioning IMPACT as part of the deal, and that at this point there are ‘no borders’.
WWE opening their Forbidden Door is not the news I expected to begin 2022, but here we are nonetheless. You can see the full list of Women’s Royal Rumble participants here.
