In 2019, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor held a joint G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden over WrestleMania weekend, with the showing selling out the world’s most famous arena.
Chris Jericho had worked several matches for NJPW prior to the show, and according to the man himself on Talk Is Jericho, he was supposed to wrestle at MSG that night.
Jericho said he was intended to Hiroshi Tanahashi on the show, but both Vince McMahon and Tony Khan asked him not to do it.
He said:
“I was actually going to do it against Tanahashi and then both Tony Khan and Vince McMahon asked me not to do it.”
Tanahashi ended up facing Zack Sabre Jr on the show at MSG, and he and Jericho finally had their match together at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in January 2020.
