Could AEW get caught up in a post-merger restructuring of its network partners, TBS and TNT as the new Warner Bros. Discovery era begins?
Now that Discovery has acquired WarnerMedia and subsequently owns and controls AEW’s airing networks both TBS and TNT, what does that mean for current programming partners of the channels?
According to a new report in Variety, TBS and TNT have both halted production on scripted series and are no longer developing any new scripted content.
This measure comes after the new company, Warner Bros. Discovery, has promised to find $3 billion in cost savings throughout the new corporation post-merger, including scrapping the recently launched CNN+.
In a report from Deadline, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels estimated that over the past 15 months, WarnerMedia pulled in $40 billion in revenue but reported “virtually no free cash flow” due to their heavy spending.
It’s unclear what, if any, impact this belt-tightening at the network’s parent company might have on AEW as they continue to have a current deal through 2023 after the last signing with WarnerMedia pre-merger in 2020.
AEW continues to air on AEW Dynamite on TBS on Wednesdays and AEW Rampage on TNT on Fridays.
