Here’s when Jon Moxley began to work for AEW on a ‘handshake agreement’ after his previous contract expired.
On Friday (October 7), AEW announced that Jon Moxley had signed a five year deal with the promotion. It was then reported that Moxley was working without a contract before he put pen to paper for his new contract.
Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Moxley’s previous deal expired in July. Explaining the situation, Meltzer said:
“I know it expired in July. For whatever reason the date July 22 rings a bell. I do know its within like a week of that date, the week earlier, it’s somewhere between the 16th and the 22nd.
“People thought when May came and went, AEW probably renewed his option year, or he had signed a (new) deal, because he was still working there.
“His deal was extended due to his time off, when he went to rehab. It extended through July, then July came and went and he hadn’t signed, but he was not going to leave, so I guess he was working under his old terms while they were negotiating certain things. Tony (Khan) wanted certain things, (Moxley) wanted certain things.”

Moxley notably squashed CM Punk in their Undisputed AEW World Championship match on the August 24 edition of Dynamite. While Punk won the gold back at All Out, the title was vacated after the backstage altercation following the pay-per-view. Moxley won the vacant title at Dynamite: Grand Slam, defeating Bryan Danielson in the finals of the AEW World Title tournament.
