NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes has confirmed that it was Shawn Michaels who pitched his NXT barbershop segments.
Speaking with Busted Open Radio, Hayes noted that the SVP of Talent Development Creative pitched these segments as alternatives to in-ring promos.
Hayes noted:
“That was Shawn. He was looking for another opportunity to get us on TV where we weren’t just cutting promos in the middle of the ring.”
“And it felt true to us, also it felt true to the culture in a way.”
Long-time wrestling fans will know that Shawn Michaels is synonymous with a certain barbershop, with the Hall of Famer betraying his tag partner Marty Jannetty and attacking him during a now-iconic Barber Shop segment in the early nineties.
Michaels recently hinted that it’s only a matter of time until some main roster stars revisit NXT, which you can read more about right here.
This weekend Carmelo Hayes will defend his NXT Championship against former titleholder Bron Breakker at the NXT Battleground event.
The card for NXT Battleground on Sunday, May 28 is as follows:
NXT Championship – Carmelo Hayes (c) vs. Bron Breakker
