Shawn Spears attempted to return at the WWE Royal Rumble in January 2024 but believes he was “a little late to the party”.
Spears announced that he had become a free agent on January 1, 2024, having left AEW in December 2023.
He made his return to WWE on February 27, 2024, joining the NXT brand and entering a feud with Ridge Holland.
However, we could have seen Spears earlier in the year with timing seemingly getting in the way.
In an interview with Fightful, Spears revealed that he wanted to return at the Royal Rumble on January 27, 2024, saying:
“All I will say is that I shot my shot. I just don’t think I got it in early enough. I think I was too late. But I did shoot my shot. I tried.
“All I can do is, ‘Hey, how about this?’ and then I let it go. I let the rest play out as it can. I think I was a little late to the party.
“So you never know. That’s what they tell you, right? You never know.”
The Royal Rumble saw the WWE in-ring debut of former AEW star Jade Cargill and a surprise appearance from TNA Knockouts World Champion Jordynne Grace.
CM Punk also had his first televised WWE match since the 2014 edition of the Royal Rumble.
