5 biggest Hell in a Cell disappointments in WWE history

3. CM Punk (c) vs. Ryback for the WWE Title – WWE Hell in a Cell 2012

CM Punk was a fantastic entertainer and performer, and I want to preface all of this with that fact. Ryback, on the other hand, was not.

He was, however, white hot coming into this match. He had a similar enough look to former WCW great Goldberg, so much so that fans routinely chanted it at him for the entirety of his career. His lack of polish in the ring was an even bigger commonality with the former champ, though.

The feeling going into the match wasn’t that it would be a classic, or even all that great, but if handled well, it would protect CM Punk and establish Ryback as main event material.

Though the two were a bit sloppier than they should have been, the match was an alright one. Of the disappointments in the match, the worst was CM Punk using referee interference to retain his title in just over 11 minutes.

The crowd’s cheers were mostly reserved for the final bell, almost as if to let out a collective sigh of relief.

2. The Undertaker vs. Big Boss Man – WrestleMania 15

This was a clumsy slug-fest, that to this day, is still the Undertaker’s worst match to have ever taken place on a pay-per-view. Undertaker was in the midst of his heel run as the leader of the Ministry of Darkness. So, having him face an opponent inside the ‘Devil’s Playground’ was genius. Putting another heel in Big Boss Man across from him completely negated the genius altogether, though.

After the awkward altercation came to an end, the ‘Deadman’ decided to hang his opponent by a noose in the middle of the ring. It was an unnecessarily dangerous stunt that was clearly thrown in to try and entice the viewers to care about a match that Undertaker himself would probably want to ‘rest in peace.’

Add all of this up, and you get one big, fat disappointment. This match is widely held as the worst hell in a cell bout of all time. While that may even be true, expectations, or lack thereof, are what prevent it from taking the top spot.
